Sarah Schaefer, Chair

Sarah Schaefer has lived in Grimes for over 20 years. As a middle school educator, she is passionate about public schools and the arts. Sarah and her husband Brian have two children who will both be attending Iowa State University in the fall. Helping to relaunch the Grimes Area Democrats this last year has brought together many skills and interests for her and continues a strong family tradition of being involved in Iowa politics.

Denise Perez,   Vice-Chair

Denise Perez moved to Iowa in 2002 and made Grimes her home in 2010. Her daughter, a recent DCG graduate, inspired her to become more active at school board meetings after hearing slurs were being used at school. Denise has been involved with DCG Kids Safety, Grimes Area Dems, Moms Demand Action, Indivisible, Des Moines for Palestine, and many other progressive groups. If you have been to a Governors Days parade in the last 3 years you've seen her passing out pinwheels. Denise feels it is her civic duty to protest, advocate, and vote to ensure a better and more equitable future for all our kids.

Cindy Newton Bishop, Social Media

Cindy Newton Bishop returned to Iowa in 2019, settling in Grimes after 22 years in Chicago and Los Angeles, to be closer to family. A passionate advocate for public education, healthcare, and human rights, Cindy brings her values into her work as an educator and community member. She, her husband, and their daughter take pride in giving back and staying engaged locally. Through her involvement with the Grimes Area Democrats—particularly by supporting their social media outreach—Cindy works to strengthen civic engagement and promote positive change in her community.

Her personal journey fuels her strong advocacy for reproductive rights, ensuring that every individual has access to the care and choices they need to build the families they dream of. Amanda is passionate about building a welcoming, inclusive community and working toward a future where healthcare, dignity, and opportunity are rights for all.
